Austin, Texas is known for its live music and humid temperatures. However, it can get rainy occasionally which keeps its residents and visitors from venturing out to hot spots like Zilker Park and the Barton Springs Pool.
Check out our list of the best rainy day activities in Austin, Texas!
PS: This does not include ideas like “go to a bar or the movies”. You already know you can do that.
Visit A Museum
Austin offers 30+ museums, and many of them are free on certain days/holidays (see that list here). If you can’t enjoy the sunny weather, you will want to enjoy the art in Austin museums which spans across many centuries and cultures.
Our recommendations: the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Blanton Museum of Art.
Go Thrift/Vintage Shopping
Austin has a ton of places where you can go thrift and vintage shopping! This shouldn’t be too hard to find as there are dozens of these places. Best of all, the owners don’t seem to mind when you window shop.
See Yelp’s best suggestions for thrift shopping and vintage clothes. We loved Uncommon Objects for high-end oddities like old watches. You can also check out Thrift Around Town, which is a guide to thrifting in Austin.
Check out Austin’s Central Library
Even if you have no plans to sit down and read, there is plenty to see at the Austin Central Library. Encompassing six floors, you’ll find plenty of places to lounge around and get some work done or just play Words with Friends on your phone. There are plenty of outlets available and a bevy of private study/meeting spaces you can book too.
If you’re not an Austin resident, you won’t be able to check out any books but you can play with their three aisles of board games while remaining in the library. Even non-residents can use their WiFi, which is not password protected.
They also have a “Technology Petting Zoo” which is basically a place you can test out different tech like Macbooks, a 3-D printer, Chromebooks, iPads, and more.
If the rain lets up, you can venture onto the rooftop to see some amazing views of the city!
Fair warning, parking here is expensive. Free for the first hour then $5 an hour afterward. You may want to park somewhere else and walk or take an Uber.
Visit the Punch Bowl Social
This huge venue has a craft bar, gastropub diner, and entertainment for the whole family. Play with their pool table, ping-pong, shuffleboard, vintage arcade games, darts, and board games. If you get brave, there’s also a karaoke room.
This venue is inside the Domain, which is a large mall. Don’t miss Punch Bowl’s Happy Hour which is Monday-Friday from 3-6 PM.
If you have kids with you, they are welcome here during the day!
Check Groupon for Activities
Groupon is a mecca of random activities and is the perfect place to buy a ticket to something you may not normally do. A quick look at their “Things to Do” category shows me aquariums, bowling, axe throwing, steam train rides, indoor go-karts, archery, and more. Before you buy tickets for any of the above activities, check Groupon for discounts!
Now that you have some ideas for rainy day activities, get moving! Don’t let bad weather stop you from getting outside, use it as motivation to do something different and explore Austin!
